Flower Numbers Tutorial

I'm not sure when it became the trend to take monthly pictures of your baby and show all of the milestones they have reached that month, but I really enjoy seeing the pictures on social media each month. Sometimes it's hard to believe how fast those little ones grow!

When my son was born five years ago the big thing was taking monthly pictures with little stickers. Since then I've seen chalkboards, babies propped up with stuffed animals, pictures enhanced with an app, and most recently blankets with the months written on them. Anymore I feel like people are always looking for new and creative ways to stage these fun pictures. Just the other day I saw one where the baby was posed with slices of pizza!

Anyway, when I found out I was having a baby girl, my mind instantly went to wanting to do so many things with a floral theme. Her nursery is, of course, a floral theme, and I never hesitate to buy a cute headband or outfit with flowers. So, when it came to her monthly pictures, I knew I wanted to do something unique with flowers! So, I decided to make flower numbers to use in the monthly pictures.

Thanks to Hobby Lobby, I had a huge selection of numbers and silk flowers to choose from and was able to quickly and easily make these numbers. Below I have outlined my process for making them and all of the materials you will need. This is a fun project and you can really be creative with it! Hope you enjoy making these for your baby as much as I have!

Materials Needed:

  • Silk Flowers
  • Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
  • Cardboard or wooden numbers
    • You will need numbers 0-9, plus an extra 1 to make 11.
  • Ribbon
  • Wire Cutters
  • Scissors

Directions:

Gather your supplies...

Hobby Lobby has an AWESOME selection of different letters and numbers you can use for this kind of project! I chose these cardboard numbers because they were really inexpensive (Less than $2 each, and I used my handy Hobby Lobby coupon!), plus they would be really easy to glue the flowers to or make a hole in if needed to better hold the flowers in place.

Glue Ribbon around outer edge of number...

On the first number I made the mistake of not coming up with a way to cover the outer edge of the number. Once I put flowers on the front of the number I realized that adding them to the edges would make it too full and the number would not be easily recognizable. Yet, leaving it blank looked unfinished. So, I came up with covering the outer edge by gluing ribbon to it. It is a slow process and you need to do one section at a time.
Be careful! The hot glue can easily seep through the ribbon and burn you.

Begin adding flowers to the front of the number...

I add the large flowers first to fill in some of the points or curves on the number. I found that for some flowers if you cut the stem too short they fall apart, yet if you leave it too long they don't lay right. So, the easiest way to resolve this issue was to use my scissors to poke a small hole, then the stem can fit right in and help hold the flower in place.
Even if you use a hole, be sure to hot glue each flower so that they stay in place.

Fill in entire front with flowers...

Be sure to mix flower colors throughout and fill in all spaces. Remember to hot glue all flowers down so that they will stay in place.

Allow the glue to dry and cool completely..

Some of the hot glue takes a little while to dry and cool completely with the flowers, so be sure to check it before you move it too much.

Use as the perfect picture prop!
