Bunny Easter Flower Arrangement

A fun and easy tutorial to learn to make a flower arrangement in a basket with handcrafted bunnies. Perfect for spring or an Easter flower arrangement! #easterflowers #springflowers #diyflowers #flowertutorial #bunny

I am so excited for spring time and the nice mild weather we have been having in southwestern Ohio this week! All of my tulips are blooming, the grass is bright green and growing again, and I'm ready to start thinking about planning out my gardens. Plus, in just a couple of short weeks it will be Easter Sunday and time for an Easter flower arrangement!

I just love to make seasonal and holiday themed flower arrangements, and Easter/Spring time is no exception! I know a lot of people go to tulips, daffodils, etc. for their spring flower arrangements. But, I like to think a little out of the box for an arrangement that is not too expensive to make, will last longer, and you could even make with your kids!

I came up with the bunny flower arrangement when I was teaching flower design. My students loved making the little bunnies out of flowers and the arrangements were always a big hit throughout the school. I remember my students used to tell me that I needed to put this idea on Pinterest, so here I am, finally sharing it with the world!

My tutorial with pictures is below and broken into two parts: how to make the bunny flowers, and then how to create the actual arrangement. Also, I got all of the supplies for this project from the grocery store and craft store. You can also get a lot of the supplies online; I've put links to Amazon below in the materials list.

Materials:

Directions for Flower Bunny:

Trace out bunny ears on white and pink felt...

I found a picture of bunny ears by doing a quick Google search. I printed them out and then traced the outer ear on the white felt and the inner ear on the pink felt. Then cut the ear pieces out.

Hot glue bunny ears together...

Start by laying white piece of ear out first and then place the end of a piece of floral wire on top. The floral wire should be about 4-5 inches long. Put a line of hot glue on the wire and felt.

pressing pink onto bunny ear

Place the pink inner ear piece of felt on top of the wire and hot glue. Press down gently so that it holds together. Be careful, it will be hot!

Repeat for however many bunny ears you want to make, remember you need two for each bunny. Also, leave the wire long at the bottom. You will use the wire to help you attach the ears to the flowers.

Attach ears to flower using floral tape...

Hold bunny ears up to flowers. Adjust so they are not hidden behind flower, but also so that they do not stick up too far. Tape the ears to the stem of the flower using floral tape. Remember- floral tape only works when it is stretched and then wrap it tight overlapping as you go!

Add black and pink pins to make eyes and nose...

The pins can be a little tricky to find. You can check your local craft store for corsage or boutonniere pins with black and pink ends. I couldn't find any at my local stores, but then the fabric section at Hobby Lobby came to the rescue! I found a box of mixed color pins for sewing. They work just as great!
Carefully stick pins in to make eyes and nose as shown above. Be careful if the pins are long they could poke through the bottom of the flower.
And there you go, you have a flower bunny!

Directions for Easter Flower Arrangement:

Wet floral foam and place in basket with liner...

wet foam placed in basket

Soak foam in a tub or bucket of water. Let the foam slowly sink in so that it fully absorbs the water.
Then put the foam into the basket with liner. If you don't have a liner for your basket find any kind of plastic dish that fits inside. Anything that can protect the basket from the wet foam will work.
Next, cut the top of the foam off so that it only comes above the top edge of the basket about 1-2 inches. This will give you plenty of foam to work with. You can use any excess foam that you cut off to put small pieces in the liner to hold the foam still.

Add the fern to the foam...

Cut pieces of fern and pull bottom leaves off. Insert the pieces of fern into the foam. Place at different angles to cover foam and give the arrangement a shape. The size of the fern pieces will determine how big your arrangement is, so be careful that they are not too big or too small. The larger pieces will make for a huge arrangement and need a lot more flowers. Too many small pieces will make it hard to quickly cover the foam and will not allow you to use many flowers.

Here is my finished greened basket. Don't worry if you see a little foam through the greens, that means you still have plenty of room for flowers.

Add the bunny flowers first...

I like to add the bunnies first so that I can put them evenly and exactly where I want them.

Add large flowers to create shape...

Use some larger blooms to create a shape for your arrangement. You can see that I put one in the center to create height, and then some at the sides and front

Fill in with more flowers to finish arrangement...

Fill in any open spaces with a variety of sizes of flowers.
Optional: At this point you could also add baby's breath or any other small filler flower if you choose. (not pictured)
