The Best Sugar Cookie Recipe
I have been meaning to share this sugar cookie recipe for a long time! It is one of my favorites. This recipe belonged to my mother-in-law and I believe it was passed down to her maybe through a couple of generations. Anyways, she used this recipe every year to make Christmas cookies and my sister in law always has said they are the best (which I have to agree with!).
This sugar cookie recipe is so easy and the dough is ideal for rolling and cutting out. The cookies bake in about 6-8 minutes, cool fast and then are perfect for decorating. The dough also only needs very minimal refrigeration; about 30 minutes.
Below I've shared a couple of tips for making these cookies along with a printable copy of the recipe.
A couple of baking tips...
Rolling out the dough...
After you chill the sugar cookie dough it will be a little hard. You will need to let it warm up or work it a little to get it to roll out easily.
Once you get it rolling out you will need minimal flour to keep the dough from sticking to the surface and rolling pin.
Roll to the thickness you desire, but a thinner cookie will be crunchier while a thicker cookie will be a little softer.
Watch baking time...
This cookie dough bakes FAST, so keep a close eye on them! I find that mine are done in about 7-8 minutes, but I always take them out as soon as they start to brown on the edges.
Ice the sugar cookies...
Okay, so icing the cookies is optional. But, I think they are best when iced! These sugar cookies tend to be a crunchier cookie if not iced, but soften just slightly with icing on them.
I LOVE Betty Crocker cookie icing! It is awesome and easy to find in the baking aisle at the grocery store. The icing spreads out great or even is perfect for small designs. It dries quickly and once it is dry the cookies can be stacked! Plus, it tastes great. What more can a busy mom ask for?!
Enjoy the sugar cookies!
