Simple Bud Vase Tutorial

Whether you just picked a few flowers out of your garden or bought a small bouquet at the grocery store, a bud vase can be a perfect way to display them!  It is also a perfect arrangement to learn as a beginner in floral design.

A bud vase is a very small vase designed only to hold a small amount of flowers and/or greens.  It can easily showcase a few roses, carnations, or a mix of flowers.  Adding a few different greens can add some variation of textures and makes the arrangement more visually appealing.

Buying materials...

My materials listed below are for exactly what I used for my arrangement, but you can easily substitute other greens and flowers.  Common greens used in this type of arrangement are a mix of tall/vertical greens and shorter/wider greens.  My recommendations for tall greens would be Ruscus, Eucalyptus, Myrtle, or some types of decorative Grasses.  As for greens that would fulfill the shorter/wider need I would suggest Leather leaf (Bakers) Fern, Pittosporum, or Asparagus Fern (for a softer look).

For flowers you can really use any combination of 3 flowers that you like.  A lot of bud vases display two or three of the same type of flower such as roses, or carnations.  But, if you like a variety of textures and colors then use a mix of flowers like I did.

You can easily purchase the bud vase at a dollar store or local craft store, or I put the link for one on Amazon in my materials list. I purchased all of my flowers and greens from my local grocery store.  The total cost to make this arrangement is only about 5-7 dollars!

Materials Needed:

  • 1 bud vase
  • Ruscus: 1 stem
  • Eucalyptus: 1 stem
  • Leather leaf or Bakers Fern: 1 stem
  • Carnation: 1 stem
  • Alstromeria or Peruvian Lily: 1 stem
  • Daisy Mums: 1 stem
  • Baby's Breath: 1-2 stems

Directions:

Begin by adding tall greens...

eucalyptus and rustica in a bud vase

Fill vase 1/2 way full of water.  Measure and cut stem of Ruscus to extend about one and a half times the height of the vase.  Remove all leaves that are below rim of vase.  Place in vase.

Next, trim Eucalyptus to about 1-2 inches lower than the height of the Ruscus.  Again, remove the leaves that fall below the rim of the vase.  Place in vase with Ruscus.

Now, add fern...

Cut leather leaf fern to about 1-2 inches lower than the height of the Eucalyptus.  Remove any leaves that fall below rim of vase.  Place in vase in front of two taller greens.

Start with the tallest flower...

add a pink carnation to the vase

Measure and cut Carnation to slightly shorter than the Ruscus.  Place in front of the Ruscus, but behind the leather leaf fern.

Next, place Alstromeria in bud vase...

Cut the stem of Alstromeria to slightly shorter than the eucalyptus.  Place in vase in front of Eucalyptus, but again behind the leather leaf fern.

Finally, add the Daisy Mum...

Measure and cut the stem of the Daisy Mum to slightly shorter than the leather leaf fern.  Place in vase in front of leather leaf.

Use a filler flower...

fill in open spaces with pink babys breath

Add stems of Baby's Breath in between flowers to fill empty space and finish the shape and look of the arrangement.

Bud Vase Care tips...

To help your flower arrangement stay fresh be sure to change the water in the vase and give the ends of the stems a trim daily.
