Easy Patriotic Fabric Wreath Tutorial
This easy fabric wreath is one of my favorite projects. Aside from the fact that it takes very limited materials and time, it also is a very simple wreath to learn to make. This is a great craft to do with kids; it can even help with building fine motor skills.
I really like to make these wreaths holiday themed because there are usually so many unique fabric patterns you can purchase. For this tutorial I made a patriotic themed one so it could be used for Memorial Day and 4th of July. I have another tutorial for a Valentine's themed one as well in pink and red! Other great ideas are to make these wreaths seasonal colors, school colors, or sports team colors. I have seen so many great color and pattern combinations, you really can't go wrong. So, have fun and be creative with it!
A couple of tips:
- Materials listed below include exactly what I used.
- There are a variety of sizes of wreaths available, so if you increase or decrease the size of the wreath be sure to also change the amount of fabric accordingly.
- Craft glue is optional but it really helps keep the wreath together and will help it last longer.
- The fabric I use is typically cotton fabrics. You don't want anything too thick or thin.
Materials Needed:
You can get all of the supplies for this project at your local craft and fabric store such as Hobby Lobby or Jo Ann Fabrics. (Be sure to always check the fabric remnant bins if you are not looking for a specific pattern- you could get great deals!)
Also, I just had to show you the awesome new tools I got for cutting fabric! If you like doing crafts with any types of fabric you NEED to get the cutting mat, rotary cutter, and ruler pictured above- amazing time savers!
Materials:
- 1/2 yard red and pink plaid fabric
- 1/2 yard pink fabric
- Rotary Fabric Cutting Mat
- Fabric Rotary Cutter
- Fabric Cutting Ruler
- 10-Inch Straw Wreath
- Clear Gel Tacky Glue
- Pencil or Knitting Needle
- Red Burlap Wired Ribbon
- Floral Wire
- Floral Pins, 1.75"
Directions:
Step One: Cut fabric into approximately 2"x 2" squares.
The fabric squares do not need to perfectly even; they will all look the same on the wreath as long as they are similar in size.
Step Two: Put a line of tacky glue onto straw wreath.
Only do a small amount of glue at a time as it dries fast.
Step Three: Insert fabric squares into wreath one at a time.
Place a square of fabric on the line of glue.
Use pencil or knitting needle to push center of fabric into straw wreath.
Gently remove the pencil from the piece of fabric; the fabric should stay in place.
Step Four: Repeat steps 1 through 3 until entire front of wreath is covered in fabric.
Make sure to check wreath for any places you can see straw and add fabric where there are gaps. Be sure to put fabric on outer and inner edges of wreath.
I recommend leaving the back of the wreath empty so it will lay flat when hanging up.
Optional Step Five: Make a bow and attach it to the wreath.
Make a bow using the white wired ribbon and piece of floral ribbon. If you need a little bow tutorial check out my Instagram story highlights for a bow tutorial!
Attach bow by hooking it on to the floral/greening pin. Push the pin all of the way into the wreath. Trim ends of the tails of the bow.
I hope you love making this easy fabric wreath! Please feel free to share your wreaths, I love to see the creativity with this project!
